Queer As Folk
Now available in the US! Stuart has got it all.
Rich, drop-dead gorgeous and
always the center of attention. Vince is
funny, adorable and definitely a babe but, unlike Stuart, he has no confidence in himself. Since time began Vince has carried a torch for Stuart but his love
remains firmly unrequited. Then along comes Nathan. Young, wild and coming out with a
vengeance, and once he arrives,
nothing is ever going to be the same again.
Strangers on a Train
The two-sided DVD edition of this enduring classic
includes both the original version of the film and also the longer British print, which offers a more overt depiction of Bruno's
homoerotic attraction to Guy
by way of his deviously indecent proposal. Based on Patricia
Highsmith's first novel, it remains one of
Hitchcock's crowning achievements and a suspenseful classic that never
loses its capacity to thrill & delight.
The Talented Mr Ripley
Recalling the visual splendor and fervent
characterizations of his award-winning The English
Patient, director Minghella's succulent dramatic thriller
is one of the best Alfred Hitchcock films not made by the
Master of Suspense. Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, this devious
exercise in deception is a twisted little tale much like its
young hero handsome trappings masking more sinister intent.
Edge of Seventeen
David Moreton's Edge of Seventeen is a real gem. Set in 1984 in Ohio it follows the
coming-out of a naive 17-year-old teenager at exactly the moment when
gender-bending pop stars like Boy George were flaunting androgynous images. As the
youth goes through his first rites of
gay passage (after being callously used by the slightly older boy who
brings him out) he emerges as a poignant gay everyman.
Mandragora
Sixteen-year-old Marek leaves
his dreary small-town life for the beautiful but treacherous streets of Prague.
He quickly is lured by a greasy pimp into selling his body to the many tourists
who flock to the city for its cathedrals, castles and tender male flesh.
Emboldened by his early appeal, Marek and his handsome streetwise buddy David
decide to go into the teen flesh trade themselves.
Rites of Passage
This taut, well-written and acted thriller
couched as a family drama delves into one young man's
misdirected search for a father figure. Del and his young lawyer son DJ travel to their lakeside
cabin to fish and talk. But when they get there, Del's estranged
gay son Campbell is unexpectedly there. Father
and son have much to discuss but before and emotional scars
are healed, two ominous strangers arrive.
Velvet Goldmine
Glam rock superstar Brian Slade marries an
intense American but falls in love with fellow
rocker Curt Wild. At the
height of his fame, he fakes his death. Now ten years later, a
former fan/now reporter sets out to uncover the truth
and reasons for his self-destruction. What makes the film memorable are the loud
fashions, some good acting, high-energy music and intensely
druggy images.
Relax... It's Just
Sex! is a surprisingly layered comedy that takes some serious and
compelling emotional turns. It didn't
get much of a release in theaters, perhaps because it's a sympathetic,
realistic portrayal of gay men and lesbians, including some graphic sex.
Lilies One of the most impressive and
beautifully crafted gay films ever made. An elderly bishop arrives to hear a dying prisoner's
confession; he soon finds himself captive, forced to
confront his shameful past and the prisoner with whom he shares it. With him as their only
audience, Simon, convicted of killing his lover as a youth, directs his fellow inmates in
a play that reenacts the events of forty years past.
trick
Gabriel is talented,
dedicated and ambitious, but he needs some
excitement in his life, so he tries out a local cruise bar, where he briefly exchanges looks
with go-go boy Mark, the male ideal in a red thong.
Thus begins an
all-night odyssey that finds Mark and Gabriel bouncing all over downtown
Manhattan as fate, friends and misunderstandings conspire to keep them
from consummating their passion.
Get
Real
One of the breakaway gay movie hits of 1999, a sharply observed
coming-of-age story infused with charm, humor, emotion and a knowing sense of
the difficulties of being a gay teen. Steven is 16-years-old, living with his parents. Despite his youth, Steven knows that he is gay. Life
changes for the soft-spoken teen when he locks eyes on his school's strappingly
handsome super-jock John.
Body
Without Soul
This controversial film provides a disturbing 'slap in the face' for all
us happy homosexuals in the West. An unflinching portrait of life on the
post-Soviet streets of Prague where young men find it all too easy to
pick up extra money as porno models and hustlers. Director Wicktor
Grodecki insinuates his camera into the hidden pain of a group of such
young prostitutes and interviews one of the top Czech porn producers.
Total
Eclipse Really bad film about
the gay love affair between 19th-century French poets Arthur Rimbaud
(played by Leonardo
DiCaprio) and Paul Verlaine. Well intentioned and
based on fact, but just awful. The only reason to get this film is to
watch Leo in the nude.
